Seasoning Your New Yixing Teapot
A new Yixing teapot will need to be prepared before its first use. It not only cleans your teapot, but also introduces the flavour of the tea to the teapot.
Step 1: Wash and scrub the new teapot thoroughly with a clean sponge or with a material that is not too abrasive. Clean out the inside thoroughly to eliminate any dust or fragments of clay with cold water.
Step 2: Fill a large non-stick cooking pot (the type used to boil water for pasta) with cold water and put your new Yixing teapot inside. Make sure that the amount of water is enough to completely submerse your teapot. Heat the water with low heat until it boils, and then allow it to steep for 30 minutes.
Step 3: Remove the teapot from the cooking pot and allow it to dry completely.
Step 4: Fill a large cooking pot with the same amount of cold water as in step 2. This time add 2 teaspoons of tea leaves you plan to prepare and serve with the new teapot. (Only one type of tea should be used per teapot. The teapot absorbs the flavour of the tea, and eventually it will also give flavour to the tea.)
Step 5: Heat the water with a slow heat (rapid boiling could damage your teapot) until it boils and steep at a slow boil for 30 minutes. Then turn off the heat.
Step 6: Leave it overnight, allowing the teapot to cool and soak inside the cooking pot.
Step 7: After leaving it overnight, remove your Yixing teapot from the cooking pot and rinse it thoroughly with running water.
Step 8: Allow the teapot to dry completely. It is now ready for use.
